Sony: PS4 is already making a profit and will deliver more than the PS2

Kaz Hirai, CEO of Sony, thinks the PlayStation 4 will bring the company more than the PlayStation 2. He announced this at a meeting on Sony’s business strategy. Hirai bases his statement on the fact that profits are already being made with the console.

According to AV Watch, Hirai claims that the sale of a single PlayStation 4 is already profitable at the moment. This would allow Sony to get the ratio between costs and revenues in hardware in order faster than with previous Playstation introductions. The fact that profits are made with only the console at such an early stage is quite unique; the company made a loss on the sale of individual PS4s at the end of October last year, but that was then compensated if the customer also bought a game and a subscription to PlayStation Plus in addition to the console. According to Hirai, half of all PlayStation 4 owners currently have a PlayStation Plus subscription.

Despite good PS4 and smartphone sales, Sony closed its fiscal year 2013 with a loss. Reasons for the loss in 2013 would, according to Sony, include the reorganization of the Vaio division and the costs involved with the introduction of the PlaySation 4. The turnover from gaming and smartphones rose in that period by 38.5 and 29.6 percent.
