Software Update: WSUS Offline Update 6.1

The German computer magazine c’t has released a program called Offline Update tool for a long time. With that program it was possible to provide Windows computers that do not have an internet connection with the latest updates from Microsoft. The program itself was developed by one Torsten Wittrock and he recently released it in his own name. The name has been renamed WSUS Offline Update for this reason and is now offered open source.

In WSUS Offline Update, you can choose from one or more languages ​​in a clear interface for Windows 2000 and higher and Office 2000 and higher. The program then retrieves all updates from Microsoft’s ftp server and then makes an ISO file of the whole per language or per operating system. Installation hint:

  • In spite of the different directory name inside the archive, you still may unpack v. 6.1 into an existing structure, overwriting existing files

New:

  • Windows Vista / Server 2008 Service Pack 2 All Language Standalone integrated
  • Mandatory installation of IE7 on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (x86/x64) systems
  • UpdateInstaller script will now check if .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installation package exists

Fixed:

  • Download exclude list for Windows XP updated since Microsoft modified the “List of fixes included in Windows XP SP3” (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946480/en-us) on March 27, 2009
  • Download exclude lists for Operating Systems refined since windowsxp-kb956572-x86-enu* was missing
  • CopyToTarget.cmd did not create missing target directories and did not report all copying errors
  • Invalid installation sequence for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Family Update (kb958481, kb958483 and kb958484)
  • Warning about ‘automatic reboot’ option removed for Windows Vista and Server 2008 target systems
  • Invalid conditional statements in DoUpdate.cmd corrected
  • (defect #75): Linux download script will now wait for confirmation on any user input
  • (defect #76): Linux download script will now ask for all required user input before starting downloading
  • (defect #77): Linux download script will now call sub-script using /bin/bash
  • (defect #78): Linux scripts contained invalid shebang
  • Further improvements for Linux scripts
