Songbird is an open source and cross platform music player that uses Xulrunner and VLC. The player can play mp3, wma, aac, ogg and flac files, among others. Songbird is being developed with the idea of ​​counterbalancing programs such as iTunes and Windows Media Player. The player is able to play music files, playlists and music databases that are located locally on the PC or on the web. In addition, the functionality of Songbird can be expanded with the help of extensions.

The developers have been working on the 0.7 branch of Songbird for some time, of which Monday is the second release candidate appeared. RC1 includes an improved user interface, a new setup assistant and the developers have managed to reduce the memory consumption of Songbird under Windows and Linux. RC2, on the other hand, is a smaller update and includes the ability to show the cover of a CD, among other things. • Smart Playlists: Create playlists that automatically update based on criteria you set.
• Album Art: Read, write and display album artwork. There’s a new Album Art Display Pane in the bottom of the Service Pane that shows the artwork associated with currently playing track. In the Metadata Editor, you can add, remove, cut, copy and paste artwork to a track – changes will be saved to the file(s) you edit.

• GStreamer on all platforms: this is our first cross platform release using GStreamer as our new media core, by default it handles all FLAC playback on Windows/Mac (or you can enable GStreamer to handle more codecs)

• Reduced memory usage on Windows/Linux: we landed jemalloc as the applications memory allocator
