suB pointed us to a new beta version of WinZip competitor PowerArchiver. This fairly unknown packer/unpacker can handle almost all file types and is therefore highly recommended. The release notes of the latest beta:

• finally fixed “New Folder” folder — new directory didn’t show if tree view
• extracting big archives (> 700-1200 files)
• problems with adding files to CAB/LHA/BH/TAR archives: if single file was selected, PA would add all files from all subfolders with the same name
• same problem when using from Windows Explorer
• virus scanning problems finally fixed
• Explorer Shell Extensions — extracting TAR.BZ2 archives
• Write Span — Access of voliation after tension
• fixed start-up bug on Windows ME
