The first Service Pack for Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2005 has recently been released available. Its predecessor, Visual Studio .NET 2003, received its first service pack less than five months ago. On Microsoft’s support pages, both the release notes as the list of bug fixes to find. blub2 made us aware of the importance of having enough space on the disk when installing the Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack. With 3.5 GB free, the installation failed completely; according to the release notes, a minimum of 6.2GB of free space is required. Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 SP1 comes in a number of different flavors, of which this one version includes the updates for both the Standard, Professional, and Team editions of Visual Studio 2005. Also there is one beta version for Windows Vista. The final product is expected in the first quarter of 2007. According to Microsoft, the service pack provides more than 70 improvements under normal development conditions, some of which include:

  • New processor support (eg, Core Duo) for code generation and profiling
  • Performance and scale improvements in Team Foundation Server
  • Team Foundation Server integration with Excel 2007 and Project 2007
  • Tool support for occasionally connected devices and SQL Server Compact Edition
  • Additional support for project file-based Web applications
