Microsoft has built up a good reputation with its free anti-virus program Security Essentials. Less well known is Safety Scanner, a so-called on-demand scanner. This is not intended as a total anti-virus solution, but can be used to clean infected Windows PCs. Separate downloads are available for 32- and 64-bit environments and are a small 70MB in size. Microsoft Safety Scanner is free, but to avoid working with old definitions, it only works for ten days. After that, a new version will have to be downloaded.
