LyX is an open source and cross platform system for formatting documents. In short, it is a graphical user interface for TeX and Latex. It is mainly used in academia, because it can easily compose formulas and shows an overview of the document structure. Unlike regular word processors that use the wysiwyg principle, LyX uses wysiwym.
