Thursday saw the fourth alpha release, or ‘pre-beta’ as they call it, of version 0.99 of Exact Audio Copy. Exact Audio Copy is an advanced audio extraction program for reading protected or unprotected audio CDs to the computer, whereby you can choose almost any compression format imaginable. The program was developed by Andre Wiethoff, out of dissatisfaction with the extraction programs at the time, which often had poor results on damaged CDs. Exact Audio Copy uses a reading technique that can detect errors with very high reliability and in many cases even correct them. Through the AccurateRipplugin, the quality of the rip can be compared with that of other users.

Exact Audio Copy 0.99 prebeta 4 has been released to fix some issues that have emerged since prebeta 3. Andre Wiethoff will now focus on the next version of Exact Audio Copy, which will have some bigger changes. What those are, he leaves open for now. Since the necessary time will be invested in the development, the expectation is that that version will not be released until the middle of this year. Another notable change in this release is that icons linking to eBay are now included with the installation. This can be unchecked and the program itself is otherwise free of ads, which Andre says will never change. Below are the full release notes for the fourth prebeta of version 0.99:

what’s new

Today I released 0.99 prebeta 4, which is mainly a service release of 0.99 prebeta 3. Some bugs are fixed (eg Accurate Rip info in the log) and some of the external programs are updated (Accurate Rip, FLAC, WM Encoding Script).

I wanted to have this version out before I start the work on the next release which will have larger improvements. Of course, the numerous changes that are planned for the next version will take some time, so don’t expect any new version until mid of the year…

Further I have included a desktop and quick launch bar icon in the installer which link to eBay. As the advertisements on the homepage dropped by a great amount over the last year, I decided to try to go this way. I hope you can understand my decision! Anyway, the icons are created only on the installation of EAC and their installation can be easily prevented by deselecting the eBay component within the EAC installer.
