The archiving utility 7-Zip has arrived at version 4.17 beta. This program, which is released under GPL license, can handle various compression formats, but is specialized in its own developed 7z format† In this version, among other things, new measures have been taken to combat viruses and the code has been further optimized. The full changelog looks like this:

Changes:

• To increase protection from viruses, 7-Zip now does not open files with more than 4 continuous spaces in the name. And 7-Zip changes such long spaces in name to ” … ” in the file list.
• Code size optimization
• Some files were moved from main package to extra package:
  • Plugin for FAR Manager
  • SFX modules for installers (7zS.sfx and 7zSD.sfx)
• New localizations: Asturian, Indonesian
