Samsung releases 8k content with HDR10+ with European streaming services
Three small European video streaming services will make 8k content with HDR10+ available to consumers. Samsung, which is behind HDR10+, is responding to this by equipping its televisions with support for the combination of 8k images with HDR10+.
The three European streaming services that make both 4k and 8k material with hdr10+ available are Chile, The Explorers and Megogo. It would be the world’s first 8k content in combination with hdr10+. Samsung does not say exactly which televisions will support the playback of the 8k images with its standard for dynamic metadata. It is likely that all 8k TVs the company will bring to the market this year, including the Qled 8K Q950R.
It is unknown how much 8k content the services will offer in combination with hdr10+ and from when. Russian-focused Megogo says it will offer dozens of HDR10+ movies for Samsung smart TVs from the end of this summer, but that probably won’t be 8k content.
For Samsung, this collaboration is probably an attempt to both expand the still limited 8k offer and give hdr10+ a small boost. The company is trying to compete with Dolby Vision from Dolby Labs with hdr10+. Both standards support dynamic metadata instead of static metadata in the usual hdr10. For the time being, Dolby Vision is a lot more dominant than HDR10+.
Playing content with dynamic metadata in combination with an 8k resolution is not a matter of course. LG recently announced that the 8k TVs it will release this year, involving at least the OLED TV 88Z9 and the LCD TV 75SM99, in the case of showing Dolby Vision material will not go beyond 4k. resolutions. Only hdr10 and hlg are possible with 8k.
