Samsung’s director of the Visual Display division, Han Jong-hee, predicted during a press presentation that more than fifty percent of all 8k TVs released in 2019 will carry the Samsung label.

Han Jong-hee told a group of journalists at Samsung headquarters that “more than half of the 8k premium TVs sold this year are made by Samsung,” ZDNet writes. A total of five million 8k TVs should be sold by 2022.

Samsung is investing heavily in televisions with an 8k resolution; Qled TVs with 8k resolution should be available in 60 countries by March. This concerns televisions with screen diagonals of 55, 65, 75, 82, 85 and 98,” reports Yonhap news agency based on the words of the CEO.

The CEO also addressed the lack of content for televisions with an 8k resolution. “Displays should come first, followed by content. The reverse almost never happens.” According to Han, more 4k and 8k content will follow as soon as 5g networks in South Korea and the United States are a fact. He also pointed to the processors in 8k TVs that are able to upscale content in lower quality to 8k with the help of artificial intelligence.

In addition to QLED TVs with 8k resolution, such as the already released Q900R, where quantum dots are used, Samsung is focusing on microLED technology. Han indicated that his company will first release microLED TVs for commercial parties. Next, the company will determine its mass-market strategy based on how consumers value the technology and the ability to release the products at competitive prices.

With microLED technology, just like with OLED TVs, the individual pixels can be switched off, so that perfect black reproduction is possible. The trouble with microLED TVs is that they are made up of millions of tiny LEDs; it is not easy to make them so small that they are automatically suitable for use in the living room.

A year ago, Samsung already showed The Wall, a huge 146″ microLED television. This screen was so large because otherwise the 4k resolution could not be achieved. On the eve of the last electronics fair CES, Samsung showed its successor, a 4k television with a screen diagonal of 75″ which is in principle suitable for home use.
