Reddit will give users money for earned karma and ‘gold’

Reddit will let users earn money if they have earned karma and ‘gold’ on the platform. Initially, only US users can get money for their additions to the platform.

Within the program, users receive monthly payments, says Reddit. Users must verify their identity via Persona and payment platform Stripe. There are limitations. For example, users can only receive money for posts that are labeled as safe-for-work.

To get paid, users must earn at least 10 gold within a month. Otherwise, the balance will remain available for the next payment. For every gold earned, users will receive $0.90, the platform says. If users earn a lot, that increases to 1 dollar. From soon on, users will be able to purchase gold more easily by long pressing the upvote button.

The program should encourage users to post better quality and reward users if they spend a lot of time on the platform. It’s unclear when Reddit will expand the program to countries other than the US.
