Niantic is adapting the Pokémon Go game so that users don’t have to go outside to catch Pokémon as quickly. For example, there are more monsters to catch in zones, and Incense packs become cheaper and have a longer effect. The update is a result of the coronavirus.

Niantic tells Polygon it is “prioritising” updates to the game. The new features are available immediately and will work ‘until further notice’. The new features in the game are a result of the pandemic surrounding the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. In many countries people are advised not to go outside, or to go out less. Niantic wants to keep it interesting for Pokémon Go players to play the game, even if they no longer go outside or walk less far from home.

One of the most important updates is expanding the zones in which players can catch Pokémon. This allows players to see more Pokémon in their vicinity. Also, Incense Packs are almost free; Niantic offers a 99 percent discount. The Packs also work for an hour. It also becomes easier to hatch eggs. The Incubators are updated to hatch twice as fast. Finally, Pokéstops will drop items more often. Niantic has canceled a number of live events, such as the Abra Community Day. The developer says it is taking the measures because of the international health situation. In addition, the company calls on players to pay close attention to where and when they play.
