Oracle CEO Larry Ellison announced Oracle Cloud Platform at the OpenWorld conference. Companies can move their Oracle databases and Java applications to Oracle cloud servers and back, or purchase the database software as a service.

According to Ellison, the Oracle Cloud Platform makes it possible to move databases and Java applications from enterprise servers to Oracle cloud servers at the touch of a button. Ellison also stated during his keynote that databases that run in the cloud have the same capabilities as databases that run on private servers, writes Re/code.

For several years now, Oracle has been building a complete cloud offering based on the software-as-a-service, infrastructure-as-a-service, and platform-as-a-service pillars. The platform layer is now ready with the Cloud Platform, according to Oracle. Oracle customers could now migrate their databases to the cloud platform, allowing non-Java applications to run at the IaaS layer. Ellison also claimed that speed gains can be made on Oracle’s cloud platform and that, thanks to the application of compression, less storage space is used on average.

Oracle also announced the Zero Data Loss Appliance, a backup system that provides highly automated database backups. These can be stored in your own data center or in the cloud. The Zero Data Loss Appliance could handle tens of thousands of databases.

The Sparc M7 processor was developed in collaboration with Intel. This CPU would contain so-called ‘software-in-silicon’ features and should be available next year. Finally, Oracle has announced the FS1, a storage system based on flash storage.

Finally, it has been announced for the European market that two new Oracle data centers in Germany will be taken into use. The data centers in Frankfurt and Munich mainly serve German customers and support the delivery of Oracle ERP Cloud, Oracle HCM Cloud and Oracle Sales Cloud, among others.
