Super Mario Party on the Switch has received an update for online multiplayer. Nintendo is adding new game options to the game’s limited online multiplayer so far. The update is available to download for free from the eShop for anyone who owns the game.

The update is somewhat of a surprise given that Super Mario Party came out over two years ago. At release there were also online multiplayer functionalities, but these were very limited. Players could only play a handful of minigames and the familiar board game mode was not available.

Now Nintendo is adding extensive online multiplayer modes to the game. Including Mario Party, Partner Party and Free Play. Also, most minigames are available during these modes via online multiplayer.

A Switch Online subscription is required to play Super Mario Party online. In addition, you can only play with friends or via an online lobby with a password. So you cannot be matched with random players.
