Nintendo has announced that more than ten million copies of the Switch console have been shipped since its release. The Japanese manufacturer has not disclosed exact numbers and the number of ten million is probably based on internal estimates.

The Nintendo Switch was released on March 3, 2017. That means the console has reached 10 million in nine months. At the end of September, the number of Switch consoles delivered was still 7.63 million units. In the past two and a half months, therefore, according to Nintendo, approximately 2.5 million consoles have been delivered. The Nintendo Switch is well on its way to beating the Wii U with this; 13.6 million units of this console had been sold by the end of September. The Wii U has been on the market for over five years.

According to Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo’s US president, it’s possible the Switch will surpass sales in the original Wii’s first year. Wii has sold more than 101 million units since its release in 2006. The good sales of certain Nintendo games, among other things, have contributed to the good Switch sales, according to Fils-Aime. Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have been purchased by more than 50 percent of Switch buyers.

Nintendo plans to ship more copies of the Switch this month than in previous months. The company didn’t mention numbers, but a month ago there were rumors that Nintendo plans to produce 25 to 30 million Switch consoles in its next fiscal year, which starts in April.

The company initially expected to ship 10 million units in the first year after the Switch’s release, but revised that expectation to 14 million for the current fiscal year, which runs through March 2018. It therefore took the decision to increase production. At the end of September, the number of Switch games sold was 27.48 million; since 7.6 million consoles had been shipped by then, Nintendo had sold 3.6 games per console.
