Microsoft warns it can delete accounts after two years of not logging in

Microsoft is going to update its account activity policy. Anyone who does not use their Microsoft account for more than two years runs the risk that the company will remove it.

In principle, users must be logged in at least once within a period of two years to keep the account active. Previously, Microsoft considered accounts inactive if users haven’t logged in for more than five years, but the new account activity policy, effective August 30 this year, has shortened that period.

Microsoft has, however, drawn up a list of exceptions whereby accounts remain active even after two years, despite not logging in. Exceptions apply, for example, after making purchases through Microsoft accounts, purchasing a subscription from Microsoft through the account and the presence of remaining credit, including gift cards. Family accounts also remain active if they are linked to the account of a minor that is still active. Users can view the status of their activity period in their account settings, the company reports.
