Microsoft seems to be working on a feature to place the Windows 11 taskbar at the top

Microsoft appears to be working on a feature to move the Windows 11 taskbar to the top. The company so far supports that the taskbar is at the bottom of the screen. Work on the feature does not appear to be completely finished yet.

The feature is included in Windows 11 Dev build 25309 and can be seen in a video from Albacore. It shows that although the taskbar is at the top, the start menu opens from the bottom of the screen. Other elements, such as an overview of open windows, also appear at the bottom. That seems to indicate that work on the feature is not yet finished.

Previous versions of Windows gave users the choice to display the taskbar anywhere they wanted. This has always been at the bottom by default, but there were also options on the left, right and top up to and including Windows 10. With Windows 11, this changed and the taskbar is always at the bottom. There are third-party tools available to use the Windows 10 taskbar again and thus regain the options to place the taskbar in a different location.

It is unknown if and when the option to move the taskbar to the top will appear in a stable version of Windows 11. Microsoft hasn’t said anything about that so far. It is also unclear whether it will be possible to display the taskbar on the left or right at a later stage.
