Microsoft has acquired the creators of Simplygon. Simplygon is software for optimizing 3d data. With the Simplygon technique, an advanced 3d model can be automatically adapted for display on different devices.

Microsoft and Simplygon are reporting the acquisition on their websites, but the amount involved is unknown. Simplygon’s CEO, CTO and founders will continue their work at the Windows maker.

Available as a plugin for 3ds Max and Maya, Simplygon was used in the creation of several recent games, according to the creators, including Eve Valkyrie, The Witcher 3, Paragon and Forza Horizon. The technique can be used to automatically create variations of advanced 3D models for display on devices with different computing power. Simplygon was created by the Swedish company Donya Labs, which was founded in 2006.

With the Creators Update of Windows 10, which is expected to be released in April, Microsoft is focusing strongly on 3d. The new Windows version includes Paint 3D. Microsoft probably wants to strengthen itself in the field of knowledge and technology with regard to 3D software through the acquisition.
