The Meta Quest 2 headset had 6.4 million active players in October last year, according to figures seen by business newspaper The Wall Street Journal. That is much less than the number of headsets delivered according to estimates by an analyst firm.

This means that many Quest headsets are unused. Although Meta has not announced delivery figures, analyst firm IDC estimated a year ago that the company had already sold 15 million Quest 2 headsets. That would mean that with a number of 6.4 million active players, more than half of the headsets do not log in in a month.

There are now 200 apps for Quest headsets that have generated more than a million dollars in sales, claims The Wall Street Journal based on documents seen by the newspaper. About 14 apps have a turnover of more than 20 million. The game Beat Saber raised the most, with a total amount of 255 million dollars. That game had 1.5 million active players in October last year, meaning just under a quarter of Quest users were actively playing that game.

The business newspaper also notes that TikTok parent company ByteDance is actively trying to persuade developers of VR apps to release apps for ByteDance’s Pico headsets. The company offers amounts of $25,000 to $35,000 for this, the newspaper said. Meta has a dominant market share for VR headsets and ByteDance hopes to win over developers with the amount of money.
