Intel shows RealSense expansion for HTC Vive on IDF

An Intel employee has posted on Twitter photos of an extension for the HTC Vive that uses an Intel RealSense module for depth measurement. With the accessory it would be possible to map the space or determine the position of hands.

The photos are posted by Dimitri Diakopoulos, who according to his profile deals with virtual reality at Intel. He has since deleted the images, but Upload VR still has them online and also managed to obtain some information about the accessory from Diakopulous.

The accessory, which is attached to HTC’s VR glasses like a kind of horn, appears to be equipped with two Intel RealSense modules. According to the Intel employee, the cameras ensure that the user’s hands can be recognized in VR applications, without having to use the motion controllers.

The accessory would also make it possible to scan the environment in real time. In theory, a warning could then be given if players threaten to hit an obstacle in space. Intel has not officially announced anything about the accessory, but the product is expected to be shown during the IDF event, which kicks off on August 16.

Presumably it is not a product that will actually be available in stores in this form, but Intel will show the accessory to demonstrate its RealSense technique. It is conceivable that such cameras will be integrated in future VR glasses, or that there will be manufacturers who will release an accessory based on the technology.
