Google makes ‘smart chips’ from third-party apps available in Google Docs
Google makes it possible to embed ‘smart chips’ from third-party apps in Google Docs. This allows Workspace and Personal users to view and use information from apps such as Atlassian, Figma and Miro directly in Google Docs documents.
To add third party smart chips to a document, the user must install a third party add-on via the Google Workspace Marketplace. By then pasting a URL of the third-party source into the document and pressing the tab key, a smart chip is created that shows a preview of the information in the document. This allows users to view the status of a collaborative project, among other things, without leaving the Google Docs file.
Google’s smart chips are a kind of interactive elements that can be added to a document. Users who hover the mouse cursor over the element will see additional information. How exactly the third-party smart chips work varies per developer. For example, Figma users can embed interactive previews of files so team members can see project progress at a glance. Atlassian makes it possible to consult details of tools such as Jira and Confluence.
Both Workspace users and users with a personal Google account can get started with the smart chips, according to Google. Others third-party apps that release smart chips for Google Docsare Whimsical, Zendesk, Asana, Tableau and AODocs.
