Google helps businesses move from Outlook to Google Mail

Since Friday, Google offers the possibility to use the new Email Migration API transfer email to Google Apps. The tool is primarily intended for developers and administrators of email systems.

Gabe Cohen, Google Apps product manager, told that documentation and sample code has been released so that software developers can write migration tools themselves. For example, software can be built with which large quantities of centrally stored e-mails can be transported to Google Apps. In addition, software can also be built that allows end users to send their desktop mail to Gmail. Incidentally, the software is not limited to Microsoft products; other mail servers are also supported.

Previously, Google had already released an imap migration tool, which can be used to move imap-based email systems. However, not everyone uses imap, so additional migration tools were needed to give others the opportunity to make the switch to Google Apps.
