Google cancels plan to boot Windows or Linux on Chromebooks

Comments and code on the Chromium project indicate that Google has pulled the plug on Project Campfire. It seemed from previous commits that this project aimed to dual boot options for Chrome OS.

Chromium Gerrit’s commits and code now reads that AltOS Mode, as dualboot mode was called, is deprecated. That’s what Twitter user crosfrog discovered. With that, Project Campfire for enabling the boot of an OS other than Chrome OS on Chromebooks seems to have been discontinued.

The first indications for AltOS appeared a year ago, and then it seemed that there were plans to only allow Google’s own Pixelbooks to launch another OS. Later last year, more information about Project Campfire emerged indicating that the option to boot Windows 10 or Linux would be coming to other Chromebooks, with the work focused on running Microsoft’s OS.

It is not clear how far advanced the plans were and what the reason is for the cancellation. Google itself has never made an official statement about it.
