The FTC wants to protect consumers against abuse and fraud of AI voice cloning. That is why the American regulator is asking for input through a competition in which cash prizes can be won for the entrants with the best ideas.

The FTC expresses its concerns about the ways in which voice cloning can be used by scammers. The increasingly advanced technology would make it increasingly easier for malicious parties to pretend to be a family member or colleague. Criminals can also mislead consumers by cloning the voices of famous people.

The American regulator is, among other things, looking for solutions to use audio fragments to determine whether it is a cloned voice. Ways are also being sought to detect voice cloning technology in real time. In addition, the FTC is looking for a solution to limit the use of voice cloning software by unauthorized users as much as possible.

Several companies are experimenting with AI tools that mimic voices. For example, Google is testing a function in YouTube that clones the voices of famous singers such as Charlie Puth and John Legend. James Earl Jones, the voice of Darth Vader, has also given up the rights to his voice work to have Darth Vader’s voice replicated in future productions by AI.
