The first laptops with new generation Intel processors have appeared in the Pricewatch. It is a Medion laptop that comes with a Core i7-8550U and Core i5-8250U. These processors have not yet been officially announced.

The laptop is the Medion Erazer P6689, which will be available in two configurations: a variant with a Core i7-8550U and a model with a Core i5-8250U. Intel has not officially released details about these processors yet, but results from GFXBench indicate that the Core i7-8550U has a clock speed of 1.8GHz and the HD Graphics 620 as a GPU, while the Core i5-8250U has a clock speed of 1.8GHz. 1.6GHz combines with the HD Graphics 620.

The upcoming processors in the U-series have a TDP of 15W, just like the current U-chips, but the number of cores doubles from two to four. This can increase performance by more than 30 percent, claims Intel. The big question is whether the Core i7-8550U and Core i5-8250U processors are from the Kaby Lake Refresh or the Coffee Lake generation. An earlier roadmap showed that the Kaby Lake Refresh is quadcore with a GT2 GPU, while Coffee Lake chips will become quadcores with GT3e GPU with edram. Since the HD Graphics 620, which is already used for Kaby Lake, is the GT2, it seems obvious that the processors concerned are Kaby Lake Refresh models.

The laptop also has a 15.6-inch screen with full-HD resolution, 8GB of RAM, 256GB SSD storage and the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 as a video card. The suggested retail price of the version with Core i5 is 949 euros; the version with Core i7 costs 1099 euros.
