Version 75 of Firefox, released this week, installs a task on Windows machines to send telemetry data to Mozilla on a daily basis. Mozilla hopes that the data will allow it to better anticipate trends in browser usage.

Last week Firefox 75 appeared, including changes to the search function of the url bar. The visibility of the drop-down box has been improved and the feature offers suggestions for search terms and the sites that the user visits most often.

Firefox 75 is also the version that adds a new scheduled task to Windows systems. Mozilla announced in mid-March that it would introduce this telemetry feature with version 75. The Windows task scheduler shows that the browser sends data to Mozilla every day.

This concerns data about browser settings and the version of the user’s OS. Mozilla emphasizes that the feature has gone through its data review, which should ensure that privacy and user choice are respected. According to Mozilla, the data cannot be associated with profile-based telemetry data.

Users who do not want their browser to send telemetry data can manually disable the task in the Task Scheduler or opt-out telemetry in Firefox via about:telemetry. Anyone who already had telemetry turned off in the browser did not send any data.
