Director Take-Two: VR is too expensive and takes up too much space

Virtual reality hardware is too expensive and takes up too much space, says the director of game publisher Take-Two. According to him, people are not interested in the current systems, which need ‘a room of their own’ to function.

Current VR systems, such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, cost 700 euros or more and also require a powerful PC with a high-end video card. In total, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick estimates that users are around $2,000 lighter, which is too much money, he said Wednesday at Cowen and Company’s Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, according to Gamespot. “There’s no market for a two-thousand-dollar device that requires an entire room. What are people thinking?”

Zelnick points out that space is simply lacking in many homes. “We don’t have a place where you stand in a big open space and hold two controllers with something on your head, and you don’t trip over your coffee table.” Nevertheless, Zelnick sees something in vr. “I’m not unexcited. I’m just saying we’ll have to see.”

The director of Take-Two was also critical of the developments in virtual reality a few years ago and noted that it might only be of interest to ‘core gamers’, who want to immerse themselves in a game.

This spring, the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive were released, two of the most high-end systems for virtual reality. This fall, Sony will release the PlayStation VR to play games in virtual reality via the PS4. Microsoft is said to be working on an Xbox that works with the Rift.
