Bungie has revealed some future plans for its Destiny 2 title. The game will get a new expansion called Shadowkeep in September. There will also be a free-to-play version and cross-saves across multiple platforms.

Bungie is releasing the free-to-play version of Destiny 2 under the name Destiny 2: New Light, which is the base version of the game. That includes content that Bungie released in the first year after release such as Curse of Osiris and Warmind. The free version includes the campaign and some pvp modes.

The game company also announced the new expansion for the game, Shadowkeep, during a live stream. Set on the moon, this one marks a reunion with an old acquaintance, Eris Morn. The expansion can be played standalone and the purchase of previous expansions is therefore not required. The same will be true for upcoming expansion packs.

Also notable is the announcement of crossplay saves. This means that players can save their progress on one platform in order to resume play at that point on another platform. Bungie still showed the options for crossplay on the Xbox One, PC and Google Stadia in its announcement video, but now the company speaks of ‘all platforms’, which makes it clear that Sony is also on board.

It is Bungie’s first major announcement without Activision as its publisher. This means, among other things, that Destiny 2 for PC will no longer be distributed via the Battle.net platform from September, but via Steam. Bungie promises that existing players who buy Shadowkeep, for example, will keep all progression. Finally, Bungie promised to stop doing exclusives so that weapons and maps will be available for all platforms.
