The maker of smartphone cases and other accessories Dbrand starts selling Darkplates, matte black side panels for the PlayStation 5. The manufacturer actively calls on Sony on its website to start a lawsuit against him.

Dbrand sells a set of black panels for the PlayStation 5 for 49 dollars, converted and with VAT 49 euros. The company sells stock in ‘waves’. The amount of panels produced seems very limited, because the panels that can be delivered in February, March and April are already sold out. Only the May sale is still ongoing. For now it is a limited edition for the console with disc tray; a variant for the digital PS5 follows.

In addition to the side panels, the company sells a mid-range to give the PlayStation 5 an alternative look. In combination with the Darkplates, the price is therefore $61. The promotion of the accessories is full of venomous stings to Sony. “We took Sony’s monumental achievement in bad design and made it matte black.”

On the inside of the side panels, the company has incorporated a pattern of small logos, noting that they differ legally enough from the classic shapes of PlayStation buttons. The product page also features the call ‘Go ahead, sue us’.

With this, the company refers to legal pressure from Sony against accessory maker CustomizeMyPlates last year. That company also sold panels for the PS5, but stopped when Sony threatened a lawsuit. Earlier this year, CMP resumed sales, with a limited edition.
