Bloomberg: Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake postponed for now
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake has reportedly been delayed indefinitely. Game studio Aspyr would have problems internally and would not be able to meet the target release date of 2022. The studio has not officially announced anything yet.
The remake of the 2003 RPG is in development at the Texan studio Aspyr Media, where according to Bloomberg sources internal problems. The game would have been in development for three years and was shown as a demo, or vertical slice, to Lucasfilm and Sony at the end of June. Employees were subsequently told that the demo did not match the studio’s wishes. A week later, design director Brad Prince and art director Jason Minor were suddenly fired, according to the sources.
Aspyr employees would have been given the impression that development of the game was well on its way, but it later turned out that a disproportionate part of the budget had been invested in the demo and that the development process in its current form was not sustainable. Aspyr promised employees and listed partners that Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake would still be released in 2022. According to anonymous developers at the company, a realistic release target is earlier 2025.
For now, development of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake has been paused, while Aspyr is looking at “new contracts and development opportunities,” according to the sources. One such option is to engage Saber Interactive, another US studio that is under the same parent company, Embracer Group. Saber Interactive has only helped with the project so far, but could potentially take on the remake entirely.
