Aston Martin will use electric motors and battery systems from US carmaker Lucid as part of a deal worth more than $450 million. It is the first time that Lucid has sold its technology to another car manufacturer.

The two parties are talking about a ‘long-term strategic partnership’ that will allow Aston Martin to make electric cars. The British car manufacturer had been developing an electric sedan for a long time, the Rapide E, but never brought it to market. Aston Martin is now working on a new model that should appear on the market in 2025. The manufacturer says that this vehicle should use a new platform.

Lucid Motors’ dual electric motor

Lucid Motors is an American car manufacturer that has been producing the Air, a four-door sedan, since 2021. This model comes with different engines and battery packs, with one engine on the rear axle for 480hp or 358kW, up to three engines for four-wheel drive and 1050hp or 772kW. The battery has a capacity of 88 to 118 kWh, which allows the car to drive up to 830 kilometers. Charging is possible up to 351kW.

With the agreement, Lucid says it is one step closer to making its own technology more widely available. According to the Financial Times gets Lucid converted 217 million euros from Aston Martin and 3.7 percent of its shares. The British manufacturer initially planned to use batteries from Mercedes, also a shareholder of Aston Martin.
