Apple releases a new version of its Mac Pro. This resembles the current Mac Pro with Intel chips from 2019, but this time it has an Apple Silicon socket. The new workstation will be released next week from 8,400 euros.

Apple provides the device of a new M2 Ultra SoC, which combines two M2 Max chips via an UltraFusion interconnect. This gives the device a CPU with 24 cores and a GPU with a maximum of 76 cores. The Mac Pro can be supplied with a maximum of 192GB of memory. The SoC also has a media engine that, according to Apple, can handle up to 22 simultaneous 8k streams. Apple claims that the chip is twenty percent faster than the current M1 Ultra.

The design of the Mac Pro appears unchanged. The desktop again has a metal frame with holes for airflow. The device will once again be available in tower format as a rackmount housing. The Mac Pro can also be opened and fitted with expansion cards. The device has six PCIe 4.0 slots for this. For example, Apple mentions expansion cards with extra network ports and cards with SDI connections for professional cameras.

The Mac Pro also has two HDMI connections and two RJ45 connections for 10Gbit/s Ethernet. The device also has eight Thunderbolt 4 ports, supporting up to six Pro Display XDR monitors. The desktop also has three USB-A ports, a 3.5mm jack and support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

Mac Pro was the only Mac series that did not yet have an Apple-designed Arm chip. All other Mac models had already been upgraded with an Apple Silicon chip since Apple announced the switch to Arm in 2020.
