Google is “interested” in providing Android Wear support for iOS, a company executive said. Currently, smartwatches that run on Wear are only suitable for Android 4.3 and higher.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, Google CEO Jeff Chang states that his company is interested in expanding the compatibility of the Android Wear operating system. When asked whether there will be support for iOS from Apple, the answer was that this “is not excluded”. However, Chang also states that it doesn’t just depend on Google whether iOS support is built into Android Wear.

One of the problems with making Android Wear compatible with other operating systems is api support. According to Chang, there are technical limitations that must be taken into account. He declined to say whether work is already underway on iOS support for Android Wear.

For the time being, Android Wear is only suitable for connections with smartphones on Android 4.3 and higher. With support for iOS, or other mobile operating systems, smartwatches with Android Wear would become considerably more widely applicable. Recently, Google released an update for its mobile OS, which makes it possible, among other things, to use GPS and to connect Bluetooth headsets.
