The price reduction of Radeon R9 graphics cards that recently became known is only temporary and AMD has not adjusted the suggested retail prices. Prices for the Radeon R9 290 and 290X graphics cards are reportedly going to rise again as supplies run out.

The company has confirmed to Tom’s Hardware that the price cut for the R9 graphics cards is temporary and that it is just a promotion that AMD’s partners have initiated to clear supplies. The website reports that the price cut in the US has already taken effect and that the European market should follow in the coming week. The promotion will reportedly end when the video card stocks run out.

The news about the price cut came out at the beginning of this week. AMD would like to make its video cards more attractive with the lower prices and thus want to position itself better compared to the new GTX 980 and 970 from competitor Nvidia. About a quarter of the total amount of the video cards would be taken off. The R9 290X came out in October 2013, the R 290 followed in November.
