AMD Announces Prices EPYC Milan-X CPUs With 3D V-Cache

AMD announces the pricing of the EPYC Milan-X refresh. The top model and ‘entry-level model’ have a respective suggested retail price excluding VAT of 7974 euros and 3792 euros. The server processors are now available and can be installed in an existing Milan SP3 socket after a bios update.

All X variants in the new EPYC series of processors are based on AMD’s Zen 3 architecture and will be equipped with the previously unveiled 3D V-Cache. With this technique AMD literally stacks 64MB extra L3 cache on top of the already existing 32MB cache memory. This applies to each of the eight chiplets; each new EPYC processor is equipped with eight chiplets for a total of 768MB of L3 cache memory.

What is striking is that the EPYC 7773X with 2.2GHz has a slightly lower base clock than the former flagship, the 7763, which had to reach an average of 2.45GHz. Due to the significant additional amount of L3 cache, AMD may have opted for a lower clock speed to keep the TDP at 280 watts. The same applied at the beginning of January for the first and as yet only consumer CPU with 3D V-Cache.

In its own words, AMD uses already Zen 3 CPUs with 3D V-Cache which would see it see a 44 percent improvement in certain energy decomposition analysis tasks. Simulations based on Synopsys VCS with an EPYC 7773X would be up to 66 percent faster compared to the EPYC 73F3. AMD claims that the 24-core 7573X can solve up to 88 percent more computational fluid dynamics problems per day than competitors’ 32-core processors. In addition, the company states that, based on 4600 Ansys CFX jobs per day, EPYC 7573X users need half the servers and can expect up to 49 percent lower power consumption.
