The hacker collective Lizard Squad appears to be making attempts to attack the Tor network. Thousands of nodes have been added to the network in a short time. The administrators try to remove the new nodes before they are abused.

In a cryptic description on Twitter, Lizard Squad know to have his arrows aimed at Tor. Why Tor is being attacked was not made clear, but a user on Reddit noted that thousands of nodes have been added to the network in a short time under the name LizardNSA. The hacker collective may want to eavesdrop on Tor traffic: that is one of the risks if a party controls a large part of the nodes.

The administrators behind Tor have indicated in a response to The Verge that they are not concerned about the nodes of Lizard Squad. Because they are relatively new, they are allocated little bandwidth, limiting their role in Tor traffic. In the meantime, the administrators have already started removing the LizardNSA nodes. There would be no threat to the anonymity of Tor users.

Lizard Squad previously shut down Xbox Live and PlayStation Network with a ddos attack. The hacker collective has now stopped this attack. The ddos ensured that gamers could not play online for some time during the Christmas season.
