Google hires Oxford University researchers for machine learning
Google has entered into a close partnership with two teams from Oxford University who research artificial intelligence. Google’s DeepMind department wants to develop new algorithms for machine learning together with the scientists.
The partnership between the internet giant and the prestigious British university has been announced by Demis Hassabis, Google’s technology manager and founder of Google-acquired DeepMind. According to the plans, two research teams will work with DeepMind to develop new artificial intelligence technology, while Google will in return donate money to help set up new study programs at Oxford University.
The participating teams of Oxford each have their speciality. For example, a group of scientists is investigating how computers can recognize natural language, while a second team is focusing on research into recognizing images and objects using smart algorithms. Google, in turn, is already doing a lot of research into artificial intelligence. In addition to the acquisition of DeepMind, it has also set up a laboratory in which neural networks are used for the development of machine learning systems.
