Samsung announces flexible batteries for wearables
Samsung has developed technology for the manufacture of flexible batteries. These are primarily intended for use in wearables, such as smartwatches. LG also showed new batteries, mainly intended for electric cars.
The new battery technology has been demonstrated at the InterBattery conference, which will be held in Seoul, The Korea Times reported. Samsung SDI, the energy division of the company, demonstrated batteries that can be rolled up, something that should especially offer a solution in devices that require a lot of flexibility, such as smartwatches. Samsung claims that its technology enables the world’s most flexible batteries.
In a few years’ time, the technology should be good enough to mass-produce flexible batteries. According to the Korean manufacturer, production must first be optimized. The current production method is not yet stable enough to be able to supply massively rollable batteries, according to Samsung SDI.
LG also made itself heard in the battery area. The manufacturer showed new batteries, including a concept for a ‘curved’ battery. Retractable batteries were not included, but the company emphasized products intended for use in electric cars during the exhibition.
