Developers have implemented the in-kernel driver for WireGuard in OpenBSD. The open source platform for vpn is expected to make its debut in version 6.8 of the operating system.

WireGuard’s integration into OpenBSD has been announced on the WireGuard and OpenBSD mailing lists. It concerns the WG kernel driver in the operating system, on which WireGuard developers Matt Dunwoodie and Jason Donenfeld have had the necessary work.

They state that upstreaming the code was a pleasant experience and that the feedback on the three patch revisions that were needed was very helpful. They also expect the WireGuard implementation to appear in the final release of OpenBSD 6.8.

The integration follows the arrival of WireGuard to the Linux kernel 5.6. WireGuard is an open source application and protocol, and has grown in popularity in a short time due to its limited codebase. The software should make VPN setup easy and provide fast, secure connections. Due to the limited code size, the software can be quickly screened for security problems.
