Valve places teaser site for VR glasses Index with presumably inside-out tracking

Valve has published a teaser site for vr glasses Index. An image shows the bottom of the previously unannounced headset. Two cameras can be seen on it, presumably these are for inside-out tracking. The teaser gives a date of May 2019.

Although Valve provides little information, a few things can be deduced from the image. Most notable change is the addition of the two cameras on either side of the headset. These are likely to be used for inside-out tracking, which doesn’t require external sensors to determine the headset’s position. The recently presented Oculus Rift S glasses, among others, have this way of tracking.

If you increase the brightness and contrast of the image, you will see at least six dots on the headset. These are similar to the dots used in the HTC Vive for remote tracking, according to Ars Technica. The device may also receive support for that.

Finally, the image shows a slider. This is probably intended for adjusting the interpupillary distance, i.e. the distance between the user’s pupils. This should increase comfort for people with a different distance between the pupils of both eyes. The Oculus Rift S does not have such a mechanism to adjust the distance, one of the co-founders of Oculus recently complained about this.

The teaser matches images that leaked late last year. Then there was talk of glasses with a field of view of 135 degrees and the Knuckles controllers would be included. The resolution would be the same as that of the HTC Vive Pro, namely 1440×1600 pixels per eye.

Whether these specifications have been adjusted in the meantime is unclear, Valve itself does not provide any further information about the headset. HTC is not mentioned anywhere on the glasses, the manufacturer of the previous Valve glasses. Finally, Valve gives the date of May 2019, whether the headset will be released or whether Valve will announce more about it is not clear.
