Bloomberg reports, citing sources, that Twitter is working on a filter that will allow users to rid their timeline of unwanted words. The feature is said to aim to protect users from offensive language.

The news agency also reports that Twitter has been working on the feature for about a year. Not much is known about the exact functioning of the filter. So far, it’s only clear that the feature allows users to ban tweets containing certain words from their timeline. In time, the function could be used as a kind of moderator and also allow users to block certain hashtags, the sources said.

According to Bloomberg, the development of the feature is another step in the fight against the offensive language that is said to be common on the platform. In addition, Twitter has engaged outside help to counteract this type of behavior. In addition, the company previously came up with a way to report users more easily.

Recently, the service also introduced a so-called ‘quality filter’ that affects displayed notifications and search results by, for example, hiding tweets from Twitter bots. However, there is no word-based filter yet, users can now only completely block accounts if they exhibit undesirable behavior.
