Twitter closes program for verified accounts due to too many requests

A week after Twitter reopened its ‘verified’ program, it closed again. The requests for the check mark next to a username ran so quickly that the social media company could not keep up.

Twitter previously said it took into account waiting times that could go up to ‘a few weeks’, but the queue is now presumably even longer than that. The company does promise to open up again to applications in the future. In total, the program ran eight days before the stopped again. It is not known how many people used Twitter for the trial.

The check marks next to account names are to indicate that a Twitter account is legitimate and not an imitation. It is primarily intended for accounts that ‘get a lot of public interest’. The check marks are intended for governments, companies, brands, organizations, journalists, entertainment figures, athletes and other parties. Twitter explained that in a blog postwhen it started verifying again.

The verified status also includes additional guidelines. “These verification guidelines are designed to encourage healthy conversations for the betterment of the Twitter community at large. They follow the philosophy of leading by example, addressing others as you would like to be spoken to, and taking an authentic and respectful approach to public debate.”

Twitter is simultaneously working on a paid subscription for the platform. ‘Twitter Blue’ was already leaked thanks to the well-known reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong. Now a reference to Twitter Blue, and the price of 2.99 euros, has also appeared in the App Store. Other Twitter projects that involve payment include Super Follows and the Tip Jar. Only the latter is available, and then only with a select group of users, but anyone can tip those pots.
