Airline EasyJet says the data of about nine million customers has been stolen. The company reports that it has been hacked and that email addresses and travel data have been stolen as a result. In two thousand cases, credit card details were also stolen.

EasyJet informs customers in an email that all victims will be informed. “If you don’t get a message, your data hasn’t been stolen,” the message reads. EasyJet warns customers that they are more at risk from phishing attacks. “Certainly during the covid-19 crisis, there is a greater chance that data will be misused for online scams.”

It’s not exactly clear what happened. EasyJet itself talks about ‘an attack from a very sophisticated source’, but does not give any details about that attack. It is also not clear when that took place, and how long it lasted. However, you can see on Twitter how customer service is already speaking to customers at the beginning of April who at that time have questions about an email they received in connection with a data breach. In the meantime, the burglars would no longer have access to the data.

EasyJet says “about nine million customers” were affected by the data breach. Their e-mail addresses and their travel details have been stolen. It is not known how far back the data goes. Credit card details were also stolen from 2208 customers. According to EasyJet, no passport data was stolen.

Customers will be informed about the data breach until May 26. In addition, the airline has filed a report with the police and the British privacy regulator.
