Technicolor sues Samsung in Europe for patent infringement

Technicolor, maker of video technology, has sued Samsung in several European courts for patent infringement. According to the video company, the electronics maker is violating ten patents with its smartphones and TVs.

The French company says the Samsung products infringe patents in the field of video encoding and telecommunications. It is unknown which patents are involved. It is also unclear what Technicolor has done so far to agree a license with Samsung. Until now, nothing was known about a conflict between the two companies.

Technicolor has filed suit in its home country of France with the court in Paris and has filed charges in Germany in Mannheim and Düsseldorf. The regional court in Mannheim is especially popular with companies that believe that their patents have been infringed, because that court often favors patent holders.

Samsung has not yet responded to the complaint. The South Korean manufacturer is often embroiled in patent conflicts. The biggest of these was with Apple a few years ago. At its peak, lawsuits were pending in twenty countries.
