Synology announces the DiskStation DS418Play, a 4bay NAS intended to be used as a multimedia hub. The storage device is equipped with a slightly more powerful Intel processor and more memory than its predecessor.

The Synology DiskStation DS418Play includes an Intel Celeron J3355, a 14nm dual-core clocked at 2GHz with burst up to 2.5GHz. This makes the CPU of the DS418Play somewhat more powerful than the Celeron N3060 of the DS416Play, which Synology announced fifteen months ago. That processor did its job at 1.6GHz with a burst to 2.48GHz and also has less memory bandwidth.

Synology also supplies the DS418Play with 2GB ddr3l instead of the 1GB ddr3 of the DS416Play. The new NAS has two memory slots and the memory can be expanded up to 6GB. The device can house up to four hard drives for a total storage capacity of 40TB. Among other things, the device can transcode 4k video at 30fps with h264 or h265.

The NAS has a USB 3.0 port on the front, and two gigabit Ethernet ports and a single USB 3.0 port on the back. The DSPlay416Play also had two USB 3.0 ports on the back. Synology will announce more about its next-generation products and services at an event in Utrecht.
