The internet company built the first installation on the island of Unalaska above Alaska, although no information was shared at the time about the possible commercial rollout of the concept. In the meantime, Starlink reports on its website that customers can have an internet installation built for the stated amount, plus a monthly ‘subscription’ of $75,000 per gigabit per second. The company promises up to 10Gbit/s symmetrical upload and download speeds with a latency of less than 99ms.

The service is intended for internet providers who want to provide internet in remote areas. Starlink says that with a 10Gbit/s connection, thousands of people can be provided with an internet connection. The internet traffic from a Starlink gateway is routed via satellites to the relevant Community Gateway installation. Such a facility is being built by Starlink, but the company requires customers to facilitate “the space, power and lugging equipment.”
