Sony says it “would like to talk about cross-platform multiplayer” with publishers and developers who are interested. Microsoft announced earlier this week that it was open to multiplayer between Xbox Live and other platforms.

In a statement to Gamespot, Sony appears to indicate in cautious terms that the company is interested in enabling cross-platform multiplayer between Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. Microsoft announced on Monday that the Xbox platform will receive support for cross-platform multiplayer. Initially, this is about cross-platform support between Windows and Xbox Live, but Microsoft clearly indicated that it was open to other platforms.

Although Sony and Microsoft don’t mention each other’s platforms, everything seems to indicate that the two companies do like cross-platform multiplayer between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It is not clear whether the companies will really sit down with each other for this. The console builders may enter into talks with game makers and in this way they can indirectly collaborate on multiplayer support between the different networks.

Cross-platform multiplayer between a console and PC is not new. Sony also states in the statement that PlayStation already supported such collaboration with Final Fantasy 11 on the PlayStation 2 and PC in 2002. To date, however, it has never been possible for gamers from two competing consoles to play the same game against each other.

If cross-platform support comes between Xbox and PlayStation, Rocket League will likely be the first game to allow that. Currently, gamers on the PS4 can already play the game against people who have the PC version on Steam. Microsoft is going to make the same possible with the Xbox One version. However, the developer of Rocket League has already announced that more information about cross-platform capabilities between other platforms will be coming “soon”.
