Sony makes more profit despite falling deliveries of Xperia smartphones

Deliveries of Sony Xperia smartphones have fallen by almost a third in a year. This is evident from the manufacturer’s quarterly figures. The group as a whole fared better and Sony made a profit. Shipments of PlayStation 4 consoles also increased.

Where Sony delivered a total of 9.9 million smartphones in the summer of last year, that has fallen to 6.7 million in the same period this year. According to Sony, the decline is due to a focus on high-end models at the expense of cheaper smartphones, which means that although deliveries fall, profitability must increase. That happened: the operating loss in the mobile division fell by 88 percent: instead of 170 billion yen, the loss amounted to only 20 billion yen, which is currently about 150 million euros.

The figure does not yet include deliveries for the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact, which were released this month. The figures run until September 30. Sony’s smartphone division is doing better in the last months of the year anyway.

Shipments of PS4 consoles did increase, from 3.3 million in the summer months last year to 4 million now. The number of TVs delivered fell from 3.6 million to 3 million, the number of cameras from 2.2 million to 1.6 million.

Sony as a group made a profit of approximately 667 million euros on a turnover of 14.3 billion euros.
