Sony has sold 7.8 million units since the release of the PlayStation 5 in November last year. In the past quarter, this amounted to 3.3 million copies. Despite the shortfalls, the PS5 is Sony’s fastest-selling console to date.

The number of 7.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles sold was reached between November 12 last year and March 31 this year. Sony delivered 3.3 million units in the past three months, according to the company’s quarterly figures. That’s less than the 4.5 million units sold last year, but Sony emphasizes that the demand for the console is still higher than the supply.

Slightly more PlayStation 5 units were sold than PlayStation 4 consoles sold in the comparable period after release. The PS4 stood at 7.6 million copies in a similar time frame. Sony expects PS5 sales to be higher than PS4 sales in the coming year as well, but how many more copies can be delivered also depends on ongoing chip shortages.

PlayStation 5 deliveries vs. PlayStation 4 in comparable period after release

In the past quarter, Sony sold another million PlayStation 4 consoles, bringing the total number of PS4 consoles shipped to 115.9 million units. Now that the PS5 has been released, PS4 deliveries are plummeting. Sony shipped 5.7 million PS4s in the past financial year; a year earlier, there were still 13.5 million.

According to Sony, a total of 338.9 million PlayStation 4 and 5 games were shipped in the previous fiscal year, which runs from April to March. The majority, 65 percent, was sold as a digital download. Sony itself supplied 58.4 million first-party games. Those are the titles released by Sony’s own PlayStation Studios. In the coming financial year, Sony expects to sell more of its own games and to generate a higher turnover from it.

The total number of PlayStation Plus subscribers has risen to 47.6 million. That is 200,000 more than in the previous quarter. The number of active users on the PlayStation Network dropped to 109 million. In the previous quarter, there were 114 million. Sony measures the number of users in the last month of the relevant quarter. So the most recent number is for active users in March. The number of active users was probably higher last year due to the corona pandemic and the holidays.

The release of the PlayStation 5 ensured that Sony’s Game & Network services division achieved its highest annual turnover to date, equivalent to about 20.8 billion euros. The profit came in at around 2.7 billion euros, which is also a record for the division. Sony does note that the PlayStation 5 is still being sold below cost, which has a negative impact on the numbers. Because a profit is made with the sale of games and subscriptions, profit remains below the line.

Smartphones and TVs

Sony delivered 2 million TVs in the past quarter. A year ago, that was 1.4 million copies in the same period. For the entire fiscal year, TV deliveries at 9.3 million units remained the same as last year.

The number of Sony smartphones delivered continues to fall. In the past quarter there were 400,000 units. That is the same as the same period last year, but deliveries in the financial year fell to 2.9 million, from 3.2 million a year earlier.

Sony closed the financial year with a turnover of 8999.4 billion Japanese yen, converted about 68.5 billion euros. The net profit amounted to 8.9 billion euros, which is the highest annual profit for the company ever.
